LESSON PLACEMENT GUIDELINES

Placing swimmers is the correct level is key for them to get the most out of their swimming lesson experience.  PLEASE read over these placement guidelines and use the information available to help you know the best class for your child. You are also welcome to call me and I am happy to answer any of your placement questions.  It’s also a great idea to take your child to a pool and ask them to show you these skills so you know the best placement for them before registration. Keep in mind that it is VERY common for a student to need to repeat a class multiple times in order to get these skills down.  If your child has taken from me before I have a record of which class they should register for.  If you are teetering on trying to decide between two levels it is best to put your child in the LOWER level so they can really solidify their skills for that class.

LEVEL 1- Air/water exchange. Children will learn how to blow bubbles and be able to comfortably put their face in the water.  We will work on being able to “bob” or go under the water several times in a row.  Students will work on basic elements of floating (teacher assisted) and moving more independently in the water.  I recommend students be three years old or older for this class.  If your child is 2 1/2, potty trained, and doesn’t experience separation anxiety they would also be fine to register for this class.

LEVEL 2Floating. The goal for this class is for students to be able to float, both on their front and back, for five seconds unassisted.  Students must be able to comfortably put their faces in the water to register for this class. I recommend level two students be four years old or older.

LEVEL 3Glides. The goal for this class is for students to be able to glide across the pool, unassisted and without touching the bottom of the pool for the length of 17 feet. We will begin to incorporate correct kicking methods and underwater glides as well.  Students will begin to practice these skills in the deep end of the pool with teacher assistance.  Students should be at least five years old and 40 inches tall to handle the coordination needed for this class.

LEVEL 4Side Glides. Head position for breathing is a key element for being a great swimmer.  This class teaches swimmers how to side glide and breath correctly for the freestyle stroke.  We begin to incorporate arm movement and start to piece the freestyle stroke together.  Students will transition into being able to swim in the deep end more independently.

***FOR LEVELS FIVE, SIX AND SEVEN SWIMMERS MUST BE ABLE TO SWIM  UNASSISTED AND CONFIDENTLY IN THE DEEP END OF THE POOL.  SWIMMERS MAY TAKE THESE THREE LEVELS IN ANY ORDER. THE MAJORITY OF EACH LESSON WILL BE FOCUSED ON THE STROKES LISTED BELOW.  A SMALL PORTION OF THE CLASSES WILL TEACH TREADING, DIVING AND FOR STUDENTS THAT ARE READY, FLIP TURNS.

LEVEL 5-Freestyle

LEVEL 6-Backstroke

LEVEL 7-Breaststroke
